About
Bio
Ben Piper is an illustrator and a concept artist who works to develop stories that inspire wonder about the world and courage to chase after personal aspirations. To do so, he is currently researching how humans learn, store, and sort information in his current work.
In Athens, Ohio he has had the opportunity to display work at the Kennedy Museum, work together with artists to plan and execute a mural on the wall of a local bakery, create puppets for a community outreach program, develop storyboards for a children’s animation, and work towards a Bachelors of Fine Arts with a painting and drawing concentration alongside a minor in Japanese.
In his last year of school he had the opportunity to study abroad in Japan for a year. While in Japan he kept a journal of how his memory dealt with his experiences in Japan, which has become the foundation for his current work.
Artist Statement
The work I make seeks to inform my audience about the tools of human perception and to remind them that those perceptions play a role in shaping the world around us. This has led me to content related to memory, digital storage, and education.
I create drawings, sketches, writings, or paintings using traditional (pencil, ink, watercolor, and acrylic) and digital (Adobe Photoshop, Word Processing) mediums. I use these creations to develop worlds, characters, and stories. Stories, through their worlds and characters, both real and fantastical, have inspired me to look to the real world for wonder and courage.
Understanding perception was to be a stepping-stone to create artwork that would better connect my audience and inspire similar ideas. However, I have found that understanding perception helps adapt or adopt different perspectives that assist in the enrichment and navigation of daily life.
